Did you taper/bevel the original (cut) stay sections to create more overlap in the areas where you were adding the new material?

Search "Helicopter tape" same as or similar to the pre-cut frame protection tape, but in sheet form. Others use "mastic tape" which is available at hardware stores, but it's thicker. Either way, you'll need to check it frequently for wear.
