    Sterling Forest Trail Conditions

Hutch in between the purple loop is all clear as of last Saturday. I saw what I assume to be what was cleared on ME when I walked it in the rain a few weeks ago.

    Sterling Forest Trail Conditions

I was up there today, working on the trail. Things are generally drier but there are still plenty of areas where the trail is very soft. If you ride you will be leaving ruts.

    Sterling Forest Trail Conditions

I’d like to thank everybody for not riding today. I walked the loop with the dogs. We didn’t see anybody. There’s a lot of mud and water. Including a waterfall on the slope behind the pictured boulder that I don’t recall seeing before. It looks like the coming week will have some...

    Colonoscopy, how long after...

As said, the prep is the worst part. The anesthesia however is quite pleasant. It gives you a real nice nap. I can sort of understand why Michael Jackson liked it.

    Sterling Forest Trail Conditions

It’s exceptionally wet. The unofficial rain gauge on Redback collected this much water since last Saturday. That’s the snow on Sunday plus the rain Tuesday and last night. Please give the park (and probably everywhere else) the day off tomorrow. Weather looks colder and it should be...

    Ringwood State Park Conditions

Hopefully there is enough frost in the ground to act as armor.

Tell me where you rode today...

One summer in the early 70’s while hiking on the Long Trail in northern VT we repeatedly heard that sound in the distance and learned later that it was the test firing of an electric Gatling gun. I think it was for the A-10. It definitely is a distinctive sound.

Trail Maintenance - don't do this

Generally I don’t like logs on the high side either as they can cause pooling above or direct water into one spot. (Unless used intentionally to direct flow.)

    Sterling Forest Trail Conditions

Today 5 of us got out for a NYE trail maintenance session. We took care of 2 sections of Augusta Mine where the recent storm runoff overwhelmed the existing drainage and ran down the trail, eroding the tread. The out slope was cut down significantly and grade reversals were added to force...

South Gate Parking Lot Storm Damage.

I spoke with Mike McIlroy, the park manager of Sterling Forest today. He said that these past two storms are the worst that he has seen in the seven years that he has been at Sterling. They have done some repairs to the lot and surrounding area. However their rubber tire backhoe out for...

    Sterling Forest Trail Conditions

There’s been 10” of rain in Sterling Forest so far this month. That includes the 2+ inches that fell last night. I took a walk on McKeags/Redback/Hutch and Augusta Mine this morning. While some places that have been worked on are holding up well, parts of the trails are definitely being...

    Ticks

They are still active. My dog had one crawling up its leg after our morning walk today. Yuk!

    Sterling Forest Trail Conditions

Work has slowed down but we are still getting some done. The trails are soft in some spots. Please give some time for the trail to dry after we get rain and watch for the freeze/thaw. The trail surface can be exceptionally mucky and easy to displace when it’s partially thawed. Thanks.

    Sterling Forest Trail Conditions

The ground is very saturated from the steady rainfall over the past month. We were out doing trail work today. Coming off yesterdays rainfall of about an inch, there were some puddles and running water. More so at 8 am when we were on the way in and much less at 2:00 when we left...

    Sterling Forest Trail Conditions

There’s been lots of good work taking shape in the past few weeks by both the PMTB crew with volunteers and the NYNJTC crew. Thanks to all that have chipped in. The McKeags Meadow reroute was ‘dug thru’, the missing last 100 feet are done. And the shorter reroutes near to the bottom of...
