Here is the new Stuff.

Distance to the end of the singletrack just past the water crossing is .7 miles. We still have to work things out with the park staff to determine the remaining route. Some of the stuff in red in the fields are existing tracks. This is just the route that I rode this particular time.

Lost in the Twisties!

I rode 6-Mile for the first time on Wednesday 10/15/08. Beautiful park! I started on Canal and rode the Blue trail to Middlebrush Road. I knew nothing about the trails east of Middlebrush, but on a whim I crossed the road and was surprised to find the trail head on that side. I rode into that for a while and tried to head more or less continually east. I eventually came to a four-way intersection and had to make a decision. Straight went down a short hill to run drop alongside a wide creek. Right went slightly uphill and into a section that seemed to be a little overgrown. I'm not sure where left went. I decided to just turn around and go back. I rode back in the direction from which I came and something happened to me that has never happened in 12 years of mountain biking:

1. I rode back the way that I thought I had come
2. I had to make a decision at one or two splits in the trail on the way back, but I was pretty sure I knew which one was correct
3. After about 15 minutes of #1 and #2, I found myself BACK at the same four way intersection I described above, arriving from a different side.

I successfully managed to get completely turned around 180 degrees -- a first! Anyway, I plan to ride there again, perhaps today (Friday the 17th). I see that there are several GPS maps on here, but they don't help me very much. I would greatly appreciate any general advice for not getting lost in the twisties, like "stay on so-and-so side of the creek" or "skip all spurs on the left" or "you'll have to ride a couple of trails that are sort of overgrown" or anything? I want to ride much more on this side because I flew through the blue trail on the other side way too fast and I really want to extend the ride.

Thanks!

I am really happy that you enjoyed the trail that we have been working on over the past few years.

Here is the secret to 6 mile:

Ride it. Get out on some group rides and see what you missed.

You will figure it out over time for sure.

There have been some shortcuts made over the last season that add confusion.

I am going to close them down shortly.

enjoi!

Re: Lost in the Twisties

It was pretty hard to leave the thirty + miles of stunning trails in western Pennsylvania that my friends and I spent the last ten years buidling, maintaining and riding, but that's the way life goes. 6 Mile Run is pretty nice and you have certainly done a good job in maintaining this little park. It's pretty rare to find something that feels like a hybrid between MTB and CC. I don't expect to get to do any group rides or visit on a regular basis, since I'm only here temporarily and my rides will likely be sporadic weekday events. I was just hoping for a little guidance so that I can make the most of my time there.

6 Mile is a great ride for sure. Its a great time every time. I always end up lost in the twisties, and there are several spots like you mentioned where there are several paths and its not entirely clear where to follow. Several times I have found myself in a time warp lost in the twisties, or at several of the intersections by the creek that look exactly the same.

Its a great place, but it could really use some trail marking to make it easier to follow for those who don't ride it all the time and first timers. The Canal side is pretty well marked.
(no disrespect to all the people who have put so much effort and care into the trails...I do love it there!)

This map is the grail. You should post it in the trail 6 Mile Trail Directory thread. Great looking map, really well done. I can see where I was lost in the twisties on this map.
Thanks dude!:)

That's the thread we're in :D I must say there might be 1 or 2 unmarked trails in the twisty section that I'm missing....I'll let one of the 6 mile pros chime in on that. If I had a GPS I'd check it for sure this weekend (but I don't unfortunately!)

I am hoping to get out and ride here sometime this week. Where would be the best place to park?
