Classic & Vintage thread...

thats a beauty!

Thanks.
I rode the hell out of that thing till about 3 years ago.
The right chainstay finally cracked just behind the bottom bracket.
The only thing that kept it from fully breaking were the bosses that hold the screws for the "anti chain suck" device that Bontrager used to put on the bikes.
I was very bummed but did a search of the web.
Lo and behold I found Rock Lobster Cycles and Paul Sadoff in Santa Cruz, CA.
The same Santa Cruz where Keith Bontrager first set up shop.
Coincidence, I think not!
Turns out that Paul used to weld for Keith back in the good old days.
Who knows, he might've welded my bike.
Anyway, he told me that when Keith closed up shop, he bought all of the leftover tubes for Rock Lobster.
He had the exact chainstay I needed!! :D
So I shipped the frame out to him, he welded the new stay in, bead blasted the frame, powder coated it in that awesome purple you see (much prettier than the original dark purple) and slapped on some original decals.
Paul is such a nice guy, that he even gave me a spare set of orig decals for the future.
So now, my little Bonty is my go to SS.
I love this bike and hope to get another 20 years or so out of her.

Here's my commuter, a '72 Peugeot that I rescued from the dumpster.

Upgraded the drivetrain (still has cottered cranks though) and bars.

It’s a bit (read really) heavy but with the steel frame and 41C tires it rides like a couch.:D
